Sometimes, as professional travel bloggers, it’s very easy to talk about how amazing our holidays are, but that’s not always the case. There’s everything from flight delays and crap hotels to injuries, theft and loads of other mishaps that can happen along the way. If you guys follow me on Instagram – @ElleMacUK then you’ll know how clumsy and forgetful I am. So it’s no surprise that my glamorous trips aren’t always just that. Here’s some tales of the crap that has happened to me on my holidays.
It was January 2018 and I was super excited to be skipping the last bit of winter in the UK and be living my best life in South East Asia. I landed in Singapore fresh as a daisy and decided to take the sky rail to my hotel as it wasn’t far. As I’ve gone to pull my train ticket out of my pocket, my phone flew out with it and landed face down on the floor. Any of you guys with an iPhone just know in your heart when it’s cracked. It’s like it makes a certain sound when it falls. I picked it up and the ENTIRE SCREEN was shattered. I let out a wailing sound (which no one even bat an eyelid to by the way???) and one tear rolled down my cheek. I still had to walk from my station to my hotel. How was I supposed to use Google maps when I couldn’t even see my screen? What a great start to my holiday. Have any of you tried to travel without a phone?
Last summer I decided to go on my first solo trip to Italy. The weather, wine and men were all gorgeous and pretty cheap too! (The wine…not the men lol). It was my last night by Lake Garda – which is absolute stunning for anyone interested – and I decided to go to a restaurant 2 minutes walk from my apartment. The waiters were lovely and supplied me with a locally made bottle of wine… then Aperol spritz and finally some shots. For those of you who don’t drink, this is a recipe for disaster. I stumbled back to my apartment and managed to smash my face against the concrete gate lol. I woke up the next morning looking like I had been in a fight with Mike Tyson. A trip to the hospital, some CT scans and crappy hospital food later, I was released with a broken nose but no concussion. Wahey!
What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you on holiday?
