I’m so tired of hearing that “dinner and a movie” is a suitable and cute date night. Whether you are on the first date or the hundred and twelfth, it’s a bit of a crappy basic idea. You spend the first half dancing between eating and tying not to talk with your mouthful and wondering how much is ok to drink. The second half is spent in silence for 2 hours, sat side by side, but with no intimacy because Vue have decided to put massive arm rests between the two of you. Just stop it.
So here’s a couple of ideas to switch things up a bit people…
1. Let’s go back in time!
There are fun bars/arcades or “barcades” popping up all over the place these days. This is sure to spice up date night as you can order a couple of drinks in and have a bit of friendly competition on some old school arcade machines like pinball, Pac-Man or whatever tickles your fancy. You can even put on little bets – whoever loses pays for the next date. Here’s some of my faves:
TILT is absolutely awesome if you’re in Birmingham with plenty of craft beer both in tinnys and on tap.
THE FOUR QUARTERS is brilliant for if you’re in London with sites in both Hackney Wick and Peckham.
2. Go to a new hood!
When you’ve been together for a while, you tend to end up in the same neighborhood all the time. This can get bloody boring mate. Orrrrr you could have the unfortunate case of always taking first dates to the same place. Which isn’t cool. Branch out a little bit! Travelling just 10 mins further can open you to a whole new bunch of bars, theatres and restaurants. Do it.
3. You’ve won this hole!
Now, I’m no Tiger Woods, but I do love a bit of golf. Especially when there’s good company, loud music and alcohol involved. A bit of crazy golf will keep your date fun, active and involve a bit of healthy competition. If you’re great at golf it’s a chance for you to show off your skills, and if you’re like me and have no hand eye co-ordination, then you can play the damsel in distress who needs some private lessons. Here’s some of my faves:
SWINGERS is great if you’re in London. They also have a new venue opening March 2018!
GHETTO GOLF is wicked if you’re in Birmingham and the artwork is amazingggg.
4. Date Crawl
Sometimes it’s a bit of a struggle to decide upon one thing to do. You might be trying to impress the other person and want to get it right, or you might just have a really picky other half. Here’s the solution: do a date crawl. Perhaps a nice dinner at a cute little restaurant followed my drinks at a couple of different bars and ending with cake at a little dessert shop. This doesn’t have to be expensive either! Here’s how I keep costs down on drinks:
DRINKI is an app that allows you to find bars serving free drinks near to you! Fucking amazing right?! Whether it’s a cocktail, a beer or a good old spirit, Drinki has you covered.
